Social networks and privacy issues: they go together like a horse and carriage, as Frank Sinatra would say. This week’s issue is the new privacy policy by LinkedIn, allowing it to use your profile picture and even your name in advertising, without your explicit permission. Basically, when you recommend certain products or people, your name and picture might show up in ‘related’ advertising. LinkedIn does not specify how far they will stretch the meaning of the word ‘related’.
Fortunately, there’s a way to disable it, and here’s how. Click on your name in the upper right corner of the LinkedIn screen. There, click ‘Settings’.
Next, go to the ‘Account’ tab in your settings and click ‘Manage Social Advertising’:

Next, uncheck the box that allows LinkedIn to use your name and picture in advertising:

Voilà, done.
